Depression

Incidence of depression have risen tenfold since World war 2, and as biological changes do not occur that quickly, this challenges the widely held belief that depression has a biological cause. Research has suggested that the causes are changes in society and breakdown of the extended family and personal psychology.

Interestingly there are some cultures in the world where depression is relatively unknown. The Amish people for example live in close communities where they work together to combat life’s challenges and no one is isolated as they are in our modern world.

The symptoms of depression include;

  • Loss of pleasure in usual activities
  • Disturbance of appetite
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Agitation and anxiety
  • Loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt
  • Difficulties in thinking
  • Excessive worrying
  • Feeling over emotional
  • Thoughts of suicide and loss of hope
